An Invitation to Membership

The Friends of Sandhill, Inc. was founded as a 501(c) 3 nonprofit corporation in 2002. All of our activities and money raised are used to benefit Sandhill Wildlife Area and its visitors. We are an organization of interested persons from all backgrounds dedicated to furthering the interpretive, educational, and visitor service programs of Sandhill.

Sandhill is only one of many wildlife areas located throughout Wisconsin that are owned and managed by the Department of Natural Resources. Each area is unique in some respect, and all are available for public enjoyment.

In the late 1930's, Mr. Wallace Grange purchased 9,460 acres of the abandoned, tax delinquent "wastelands". He enclosed his land with an 8-foot tall deer-proof fence and named it the Sandhill Game Farm. Grange, a contemporary of the noted conservationist Aldo Leopold, nurtured the scarred landscape, raising deer, grouse and waterfowl for commercial purposes. Many Sandhill deer were shipped live from the 1930's to 1950's to support reintroduction programs in southeastern states. Deer and duck meat was also sent to restaurants in Chicago and New York City, and live grouse were sent to several northeastern states. In 1962, after 24 years in the game farm business, Grange sold Sandhill to the State of Wisconsin specifying that it was to be used as a wildlife demonstration area.
