Fundraising Tips
- Decide ahead of time if you want to charge for events or if you want to make money from sale of gifts/merchandise/food. Suggested donations also work. It is not necessary to charge for each event. It is a good strategy to charge for some and provide other events free as a service to the community.
-
Advertise. Posters at local groceries, centers of faith, schools, universities, community meeting spaces, local newsletters, newspapers. Go door to door, use word of mouth (have every member call 10 people, eg.), use the FWSP Event Calendar (www.wistateparkfriends.org).
- Be sure to maintain or gain new distribution lists at events at the parks (door prizes, merchandise sales, or park sticker sales).
- Work with the community: local schools, track/bike clubs, nature centers, local businesses as sponsors, Elderhostel groups, youth groups, and other interested constituents, universities, other Friends groups (local libraries, historical societies), and your properties.
- A good thing to keep in mind is that people tend to volunteer for special events or daylong projects, so plan accordingly.
-
Communicate. Talk to your properties, other Friends groups, naturalists, the statewide Friends Coordinator. Share your ideas and best practices.
